During the period of its historical development, even being a part of the Soviet Union, the great part of Lithuanian economy has been based on tourism. Modern Lithuania develops its sphere of tourism in three main directions: seaside tourism, health or spa-tourism, and new agri-tourism. Of course, the leaders of tourists’ attention are Vilnius and Kaunas. Vilnius draws the visitors, first of all, by its architecture, which preserved the influences of Scandinavian, Russian and German styles. The cobblestone winding streets of the old quarter are the best examples of Baroque style. The heart of the old town is Gediminas Square, facing the classical cathedral. There are many theatres in the city: Philharmonic Society Hall, the Opera and Ballet Theater, Youth Theater, and Academic Drama Theater. The tourists can enjoy the beauty of local churches: Saint Anna’s Church, the Vilnius Cathedral, and others.
Kaunas, the former capital of Lithuania, is famous for its historical center. The special advises include: Kaunas Lagoon Regional Park with Pazaislis monastery as its part, Kaunas Castle, the Devil Museum, and, of course, a list of the universities. Being a charming small town, located by the Baltic Sea coast, Palanga is one of the most popular summer resorts in the country. It gives the tourists a wide range of opportunities for water sports. Do not waste time and visit Palanga Pier, an ideal place for watching the sun set. Among the cultural attractions there are the Amber museum and Botanical park. Without any doubts the most popular natural attraction of Lithuania is Curonian Spit, which has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The advantages of such excursion are interesting flora and fauna, beautiful sand dunes, and proper facilities for the recreation. Because of its natural uniqueness Neringa was also put into UNESCO World Heritage List. It consists of several small fishing villages and health centers, considered the best in Lithuania. Druskininkai is usually called the Lithuanian “Baden-Baden” thanks to the healing properties of local resorts. The city of Trakai is associated with its castle which is the biggest architectural religious building in Lithuania. The city is surrounded by 4 lakes: Galve, Luka, Totorishku and Akmyana. So, wherever you go in Lithuania, you will for sure be satisfied, as every region and every city of the country is unique and unforgettable.
